The latest (fourth) impeachment complaint filed by ZTE-NBN deal whistle-blower Jose “Joey” de Venecia III and Iloilo Vice Governor Rolex Suplico, among others, at the Congress, is a necessary legal maneuver in aid of their quest for a senate seat in 2010.
The desired result here is maximum media exposure. Joey, whose father, former House of Representatives Speaker Jose (JDV) de Venecia, Jr. is on his last term as congressman of Pangasinan, is the logical choice to carry on with their clan’s political lineage. And he is starting big. He wants to be senator right away.
Rolex, the former representative of Iloilo’s fifth district and a trusted lieutenant of Senator Panfilo Lacson, aspires to join the biggies at the Senate while his mentor aims for the country’s presidency for the nth time.

With JDV’s endorsement, the proponents of the ill-timed impeachment complaint hope to capitalize on the media mileage that it will generate for their own selfish agenda. Joey and Rolex should know that their complaint comes at the heels of a global financial crisis, which Congress should give priority to, to address its effects on the country’s economy.
Joey and Rolex should realize that their complaint would not prosper, given the reality at the House of Representatives. The complaint is doomed from the start, even if JDV threatens to testify if summoned. A former close ally of the president, JDV warns that he is prepared to testify and to answer all questions, no matter who gets hurt.
Meanwhile, Press Secretary Jesus Dureza belittled the latest impeachment complaint and JDV’s threat to testify. He said that we just have to live with the latest antics of the opposition and focus instead on efforts to address the financial crisis.
