Another chance for Filipinos all over the world to show how united they are as a people is to participate in the ongoing search for the New 7 Wonders of Nature (N7W). The aim of the search is to create awareness on and contribute to the protection of the world’s natural heritage and to foster respect for the cultural diversity on our planet

Official committees chose nominees to be included on the search, and three Philippine natural wonders made it to the list of nominees: the Tubbataha Reef in Palawan, Mayon Volcano in Albay and the Chocolate Hills in Bohol.

Tubbataha Reef

Tubbataha Reef is an atoll coral reef in the Sulu Sea. It is a marine sanctuary protected as the 33,000-hectare Tubbataha Reef National Marine Park. The reef is composed of two atolls, North and South Reefs. Each reef has a single small islet that protrudes from the water. A deep channel eight kilometers wide separates the atolls. The site is an excellent example of a pristine coral reef with a spectacular 100-m perpendicular wall, extensive lagoons and two coral islands.

Over one thousand species, including many endangered ones, consider Tubbataha as home. These include manta rays, lionfish, tortoises, clownfish and sharks. North Islet serves as a nesting site for birds and marine turtles.

Mayon Volcano

Mayon Volcano is an active volcano on the Bicol Peninsula of Luzon Island. Located 15 kilometers northwest of Legazpi City in Albay Province, its beautiful, almost perfect cone serves as an iconic backdrop for Legazpi City. Classified as a stratovolcano (composite volcano), its symmetric cone was formed through alternate pyroclastic and lava flows. Mayon is the most active volcano in the Philippines and has erupted 47 times in the past 400 years. It is a part of the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Chocolate Hills

The Chocolate Hills is an unusual geological formation in Bohol, Philippines. It is composed of around 1,268 perfectly cone-shaped hills, all about the same size, spread over an area of more than 50 square kilometers. Covered by green grass that turns brown during the dry season, the hills resemble giant chocolate mounds from the distance during summer.

Voting for the nominees will continue until December 31, 2008 after which the N7W panel of experts will consider the top candidates for a final shortlist of 21. The final 21 will be announced in January 2009 after which another round of voting will determine the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

The Chocolate Hills is now at No. 14, Tubbataha Reef at No. 16 and Mayon Volcano is way below the top 21 at No. 52. Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay, Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park and Fansipan Mountain are presently occupying the top three spots. Apparently, the Vietnamese are more passionate with their natural wonders than the Filipinos are.

Let us vote now and tell the world that the Philippines is a country rich in natural heritage.

Hi,

When I saw the news on TV I started to create a site dedicated to promote the entries of the Philippines. You can see it at http://www.web7wonders.com

@7wonders: Thanks for your own efforts in promoting our three wonders.

May the others follow suit.

Hooray to the Philippine Islands! :) Sadly, the state of the Mayon Volcano has been declining... Sayang. These wonders are truly unique in the world. I love your blog, btw.

@Kristine: Thanks for your concern for Mayon and our other natural wonders.

Thanks also for the compliment.

i think Mayon Volcano and Tubbataha are out of the list ..
Only Chocolate Hills is present. I don't know what happened.

@anonymous: Yeah, I am wondering, too. Just two days ago, Vietnam had the top three on the list. And just yesterday, Tubbataha was on No. 11 and Mayon on No. 17. Now they are gone.

@Juland: I think there is something wrong with their database. An entry at that high position cannot just disappear like that from the top 77. Let us just hope that Chocolate Hills, Mayon, Tubbataha and now, Puerto Princesa's Subterranean River eventually make it to the Top 21.

BTW, are you Pinoy? What are you doing in Guatemala? How does living there compare to living in the Philippines?

Hello, you forgot about the 4th entry which is the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park.

I have been visiting other blogs and trying to promote my own new blog and reading other interesting posts on the Tubbataha Reef, my personal favorite among the entries of the Philippines.

I am promoting our entries to help it become popular and for other Filipinos around the world to know about the quest of the new 7 wonders of the world by the Philippines.

Good luck to our entries!!!

@Master: Puerto Princesa's Subterranean River was a late entry on the list, thus was not included in this article.

Nevertheless, we are one in promoting our four wonders to be included in the Top 21.

More power to us!
