ABS-CBN vs. GMA: Whistle-blower Names GMA Execs in Ratings Row

The whistle-blower in the alleged ratings manipulation row involving the two biggest networks in the Philippines, ABS-CBN and GMA, has come out in the open and named two GMA executives as the brains behind the alleged ratings manipulation in Bacolod.

Mark Dumago showed his face and alleged in a TV Patrol World interview that a GMA-Iloilo executive met with him and his group in a Bacolod restaurant sometime in June 2006, to discuss ways to know the trend of TV viewership in the city. He further claimed that the executive later instructed them to bribe homes with AGB Nielsen TV audience measurement (TAM) panels in favor of GMA.

In the course of the interview, Dumago mentioned the name John ‘bleep’ as the GMA-Iloilo manager who met with them and who released the payments for their services. A careful scrutiny of Dumago’s lip movements may lead us to construe that he may be stating the name ‘John C’, the call sign of GMA-Iloilo station manager Jonathan Cabillon.

Dumago also alleged that their payments would sometimes be delayed, because the approval for their money is done in GMA-Manila. It was in that instance that he mentioned the name of a certain Mike ‘bleep’ who, Dumago alleged, knows their Bacolod and Iloilo operations.

Again, a thorough examination of Dumago’s lip movements may be interpreted that he may be saying the name ‘Mike Enriquez’, one of GMA-Manila’s top dogs. Of course, all these are mere speculations as of the moment, as the newscast bleeped the names mentioned by Dumago.

ABS-CBN accused GMA of manipulating TV ratings in Bacolod by engaging in promo activities designed to bribe AGB Nielsen panel homes with 500 pesos and a bag of groceries per month in exchange for tuning in to GMA programs.

GMA meanwhile denied the malicious accusation of its rival and stated that what they were doing were legitimate promo activities, which ABS-CBN incidentally is also engaging, directed towards the general TV audience and not specifically on AGB Nielsen panel homes.

Late last year, ABS-CBN asked the court to stop AGB Nielsen from publishing their ratings results, but the court denied their petition on a technicality. AGB Nielsen later returned the favor by filing a case against ABS-CBN, citing the network in contempt for airing misleading information on the ratings row, while GMA filed a PHP15 million libel suit against its accuser.

The networks are losing their reputation simply by bashing at each other. Now, the public are quite annoyed with their occasional exchanges of statements.

I don't like either kapuso and kapamilya. These two big media empires are the reason for the corrupt thinking of the Filipinoes.
